Is Wix Really Free? (2026)

Side-by-side comparison of a Wix site on the free plan and a Wix site on a paid plan with its own domain

Last week we published every price we charge, next to what the rest of the market charges, in our guide to what a professional Wix website costs. The bottom row of that table says $0. It's also the number people often ask us about. Is Wix really free? What's the catch? Will the site disappear after 30 days?

The free plan is a permanent plan, not a trial. You can build a site, publish it, and never enter a card number. Though we don't reccomend anyone who is serious about their sites success stay on the free tier.

What changed in 2026 is how much comes bundled with it. Harmony, Wix's AI builder, runs on the free plan. Symphony, Wix's AI agent platform, has a free tier of its own. Other new tools, like NLWeb, sit behind a paid plan and a domain. Below we sort out which is which, what the paid tiers cost right now, and the signs it's time to upgrade. We've spent ten years fielding conversations that start with "I built it on the free plan, and now what should I do?", so we have answers.

What do you get on the free Wix plan?

A real, published website. The free plan covers hosting, SSL, Wix's templates and design tools, and the Harmony editor, which Wix says doesn't carry a separate price tag and is included in all Wix plans. Your site goes live at an address anyone can visit, and it stays up for as long as you want it there.

But here are the catches, per Wix's own description of the free plan and Website Builder Expert's September 2026 pricing breakdown:

  • A Wix ad banner on your pages. Wix calls it "basic Wix branding." Your visitors will call it an ad.

  • A subdomain address, something like yourname.wixsite.com, instead of yourbusiness.com. It looks and feels unprofessional for any legitimate website.

  • 500MB of storage and 500MB of bandwidth. A gallery of full-size phone photos can chew through that storage in an evening. The cheapest paid plan, Light, raises storage to 2GB.

  • No online payments. Selling starts on the Core plan, per Website Builder Expert's Wix vs Squarespace comparison.

  • No site analytics. Website Builder Expert lists analytics among the things the free tier leaves out.

Payments are one the hard walls. No app or setting lets a free site take money. The free plan fits a test run of a business idea, a website, or a few weeks of learning the editor before you commit. And upgrading later doesn't mean starting over: same site, same editor, and the banner comes off.

Which Wix AI tools work on the free plan?

The tools that build your site are free. Most of the tools that help it get found, or tell you whether it's being found, need a paid plan, a connected domain, and some traffic first. Wix shipped three major AI launches this year plus a stack of smaller features, and they don't all follow the same rules.

Read down the third column and a pattern shows up. Building costs nothing. Once you want Google's own reporting, or want AI agents to query your site, Wix asks for the same two things every time: a paid plan and your own domain. Most businesses make that pair of upgrades once they are ready to invest into their site. The AI features just give you one more reason to make it sooner.

Symphony is the odd one out. It bills separately from your website plan and, per Wix's launch announcement, works for businesses on Wix, on another platform, or with no website yet. So a business on the free Wix plan can try its agents without upgrading anything else.

Can a free Wix site show up in Google or ChatGPT?

It can. Wix serves every page as server-rendered HTML, so crawlers can read a free site just fine. What the free plan takes away is the tooling around the page.

Three gaps matter most:

  • No Google Search Console connection through Wix's SEO Setup Checklist. Search Console is where you see which Google searches bring people to you and where you ask Google to index a new page.

  • No NLWeb, so customers' AI assistants can't query your products and services directly.

  • Nothing to measure with. No analytics on the free tier, and the AI Visibility Overview stays empty until the site clears 50 unique visitors in a month.

Then there's the address. AI engines lean heavily on what other sites say about you: 96% of AI citations come from third-party sources, meaning reviews, directories, and other people's lists. Those mentions pile up around your business name and your web address, so it helps when the address is one you own and won't need to change later.

If getting named in AI answers is part of your plan, Light plus a domain opens up the tools. The rest is content and reputation work, and our guide to getting cited in ChatGPT and AI Overviews has a seven-step starter checklist, most of which works on any plan.

What does Wix cost when you do pay?

A few follow-ups people usually google next. Paid plans include a free custom domain for the first year, and a .com renews at about $21.35 a year after that (Website Builder Expert). Prices shift by region and over time, so check Wix's plan page before you buy. And sites built in Wix Studio run on their own plan family, which we covered in our Studio-versus-Editor comparison.

For most small businesses the real choice is Light or Core, and one question settles it: does money change hands on this website? A portfolio, a service business, or a site that collects leads does fine on Light at $17. Anything that sells needs Core at minimum.

Plan fees are the floor of every Wix budget, whether you build it yourself or hire someone. If you're weighing the bigger decision, our 2026 cost guide stacks them next to freelancer and agency prices.

When should you move off the free plan?

94% of first impressions are design-related (ResearchGate data, via Clique Studios), and a wixsite.com address under a Wix banner reads as temporary no matter how good the layout is. With 81% of shoppers researching online before they buy (Invoca data, via Wix), that first look doesn't just count, it converts users into customers.

The upgrade signals we see most:

  • You are ready to have customers visit your site. As mentioned above, having a real URL will make a meaningful impact on who stays on your site.

  • You want start selling. Core or above. No workaround.

  • You're paying for traffic or chasing search and AI visibility. Sending ad clicks to a banner-wearing site wastes the spend, and the search tools in the table above need a paid plan and a domain.

  • You can't tell whether the site is working. No analytics means guessing at the numbers.

Free plan, paid plan, or professional help?

We see three stages, and most businesses pass through at least two of them.

Free. Draft the site on the free plan, show it to people, and find out whether the idea has legs. Our look at how far Wix AI can take a site on its own covers where AI drafts can shine and where they stall if your interested in using AI.

A paid plan. Light once the site is public, Core once it's selling. This is also the point where it makes sense to connect Search Console and flip on NLWeb, a five-minute job our NLWeb walkthrough steps through.

Professional help. When the site's job outgrows your evenings: design that converts, structure that ranks, a store that runs properly. Our builds start at $3,000 on the classic Editor and $5,000 on Wix Studio, fixed price, and if you'd rather keep driving it yourself, a two-hour training session starts at $400.

One caution for the middle stage. A paid plan takes the banner off, but it doesn't design anything. If you've upgraded and visitors still aren't calling or buying, that's usually a structure and design problem, and our Wix Rescue work (from $2,000) exists for it. Sites built in Harmony have one more thing to plan around: it can't run the Wix CMS yet, so a site that needs growing content usually gets rebuilt in the Editor or Studio.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Is Wix free forever, or is it a trial?

A: Free forever. The free plan has no expiration date, and your site stays published as long as you like. That's different from Squarespace, which offers a 14-day free trial and no free plan. What the free plan costs you is indirect: the Wix banner, the wixsite.com address, 500MB of storage, and no payments.

Q: Do I have to rebuild my site when I upgrade?

A: No. You upgrade the site you already have, and removing Wix ads is part of every upgraded plan, per Wix's upgrade guide. Your own domain is a separate step, though. Wix notes that "upgrading your site does not automatically change your domain," so you'll connect one you own or claim the free first-year domain afterward.

Q: Can I pay for Wix monthly instead of yearly?

A: Yes, at a higher rate. Month-to-month runs $24 for Light, $36 for Core, $46 for Business, and $172 for Business Elite, versus $17, $29, $39, and $159 on annual billing, per Website Builder Expert. Paying yearly saves about $84 a year on Light, Core, or Business. Monthly makes sense while you're still testing the idea.

Q: Can you sell on the free Wix plan?

A: No. Accepting payments requires the Core plan ($29/month on annual billing) or higher, per Website Builder Expert. Light removes the banner and connects your domain, but it can't take payments either. If selling is the whole point of the site, budget for Core from day one, plus payment processing on each sale.

Q: Does the free Wix plan include a domain?

A: No. Free sites live at a wixsite.com address. Paid plans include a free custom domain for the first year, with .com renewals around $21.35 a year after that. If the site represents a business, the domain is the upgrade that does the most for credibility per dollar.

Start free, then upgrade for a reason

The free plan is one of the best things Wix makes, as long as you use it for what it's for: proving an idea before the idea has a budget. Upgrade when a business reason tells you to, like a sale to take, a URL to claim, or a search result you want to win. There's no countdown timer pushing you.

When the site's job gets bigger than your spare time, that's the part we handle. Some of our favorite clients started on the free plan. Call us at 928-821-6780, or tell us which plan you're on and what you need the site to do. We build Wix websites that perform, and we'll meet you wherever you are on the ladder.
