Wix Studio vs the Classic Wix Editor: Which Do You Need? (2026)

Wix has three editors now, which is two more than most business owners want to think about. Wix Harmony arrived in January and builds a site from a prompt. The classic Wix Editor and Wix Studio are the two that carry most working business sites, and picking between them is the fork that comes up on nearly every strategy call we take.

We build in both every week. Ask five designers which one you need and you'll get five confident, contradictory answers, usually shaped by whichever tool that designer prefers. So here's ours, with the reasoning showing: what differs, what doesn't, and a straight foward way to decide for your situation.


What's the difference in plain English?


The classic Wix Editor is Wix's original drag-and-drop builder. You design your desktop site, Wix generates a mobile version, and you fine-tune that version separately. Wix Studio is the professional platform: one design that adapts fluidly across screen sizes, with deeper layout tools, richer animation, and CMS features the Editor doesn't carry.


The responsive difference is one worth noting. In the classic Editor, your desktop and mobile sites are "different viewing modes of the same site; they are not separate sites" (Wix Help Center). Wix builds the mobile version from your desktop design and you tidy it in a dedicated mobile editor. That works well for simple layouts. Studio instead lets you tailor the design per breakpoint, with a Responsive AI tool that makes a section responsive across screen sizes "in just one click" (Wix Help Center). With mobile devices driving 62.73% of all web traffic (Statista, via Forbes Advisor), that per-screen control is decisive for some sites and irrelevant for others.


It helps to know who each tool was built for. Wix describes the Studio Editor as "tailored for professionals to effortlessly create sites for clients". It started life as the agency and freelancer platform, which explains the CSS grids and flexbox layouts, the five animation types, custom CSS classes, and real-time team collaboration. The classic Editor was built for owners. Different hands, different tools, and neither one is the junior product.

That hosting row deserves a note before you do your comparison math. Studio sites run on their own plan type rather than the Premium plans classic Editor sites use (Wix Help Center). Wix's own explanation is short: Studio "is our advanced design platform, so it has different costs associated with it" (Wix Help Center). Check current numbers on Wix's plan pages, because the gap is real but rarely the thing that decides a project.


Where does Harmony leave this decision?


Harmony narrows the question rather than replacing it. It's the fastest way to get something new and simple published, and it's included in every Wix plan even the free one. It also can't run the Wix CMS yet, and there's no path to move an existing Editor site into it, so anything with growing content or a site that already exists lands back in front of this same two-way choice.

The practical shorthand: if your site is a handful of static pages and you're starting from zero, try Harmony this afternoon for free. If your site has moving parts, or you already have one you like, keep reading. A sequence we expect to see plenty of this year is a business launching in Harmony, growing past what it supports, and rebuilding in Studio a year later. Nothing wrong with that path, as long as you know you're on it.


Who should choose the classic Wix Editor?


Choose the classic Editor if your site is a clear brochure (home, services, about, testimonials, contact) and you want to make your own edits after launch without keeping a manual open in the next tab. For most local service businesses, the Editor is the correct tool for the job.


The profiles we happily point toward the Editor:


  • The service business with a tight story. A plumber, a therapist, a law office, a salon. One to six pages, clear calls to action, photos of your real work. The Editor handles this beautifully, and 75% of people judge a company's credibility by its website design (Stanford research, via Clique Studios). Credibility comes from the design decisions, not the software underneath them.

  • The owner who edits. If you'll be swapping photos, updating hours, and posting the occasional announcement yourself, the simpler toolset is a feature. Our Wix training sessions start at $400 for two hours, and that's usually all a new owner needs.

  • The launch deadline. Our classic Editor builds run about 30 business days against up to 60 for Studio. When the site needs to be live in a month, the classic editor is the right choice for you.


One practical tip if you go this route. Because the mobile version is generated from your desktop design, check the mobile view every time you edit. It takes thirty seconds and catches almost every layout surprise before your visitors do.


Who should choose Wix Studio?


Choose Studio if your site has moving parts: collections of content that keep growing (products, listings, articles, events), commerce that needs a custom experience, a brand that demands precise layouts on every screen, or a roadmap with more site on it than you have today.


The profiles we steer toward Studio:


  • The growing brand. New locations, new service lines, a team page that keeps gaining faces. Studio's CMS can "store huge amounts of content, create dynamic page templates and accept data inputs from visitors", so page fifty looks as considered as page five.

  • The content-heavy site. Directories, portfolios, recipe libraries, case-study archives. Both editors include the Wix CMS, but page variants, multiple layouts for a single dynamic page, are available only in the Studio Editor. Worth knowing that the traffic runs the other way too: pagination bars work in the classic Editor and not in Studio.

  • The store with opinions. If your product pages need custom interactions, hover states, and layouts that don't look like everyone else's template, Studio's grids, animations, and custom CSS earn their keep.

  • The mobile perfectionist. GoodFirms found 73.1% of designers name non-responsive design as a top reason visitors abandon a site. Stuido's per-breakpoint control is the cleanest answer we know to that.

Can you switch from the classic Editor to Wix Studio later?


Yes, and it's closer to a redesign than a settings change. Wix lets you create a Studio version of an existing Editor site, and your business data comes along: products, contacts, orders, domain, plans, and most apps. What doesn't come along is the look. In Wix's words, "the design of the site is not carried over to the Wix Studio branch" (Wix Help Center).


Two more things before you flip that switch. It's one-way: "once you publish the Studio branch, it is not possible to go back and republish the original Wix Editor branch," and publishing the Studio version automatically unpublishes the Editor one. And your hosting plan can move with you, upgraded to a comparable or higher Studio plan with any remaining credit from the old subscription deducted at checkout (Wix Help Center).


Our takeaway: starting in the classic Editor doesn't trap you. Your products, contacts, orders, and domain all survive the move, and only the visual layer gets rebuilt, which is usually due for a refresh by then anyway. If your site has outgrown the Editor and you'd rather not rebuild it yourself, that's what our migration work (from $1,500) is for.


Does your editor change whether AI can find you?


Almost not at all, and the exceptions are indirect. Wix server-renders pages from every editor, so AI crawlers read the HTML the same way whichever one built them. What earns citations is answer-first content, freshness, and mentions on sites you don't own, which we laid out with the evidence in our guide to showing up in ChatGPT and AI Overviews.


Two places the choice touches AI visibility sideways:


  • Publishing capacity. Freshness is one of the strongest citation signals there is, and a blog or resource library is the most reliable way to keep a site fresh. Both the classic Editor and Studio run the full Wix CMS, so either can carry one, and keeping it fed is most of what our SEO packages do. Harmony can't yet, as it does not have a CMS, which is one of the costs of building there.

  • Agent access. Wix's NLWeb integration lets a customer's AI assistant query your site's structured content directly. Eligibility comes down to an upgraded site, a connected domain, and your site's primary language, with no editor requirement anywhere in Wix's instructions. Symphony by Wix sits outside this question entirely. Its agents work off your business data, orders, bookings, and customer records, so the editor that drew your pages has no bearing on them.


What would we ask you on a free strategy call?


Four questions, and the answers usually make the decision for you. How many pages, and how many will there be in two years? Does your content live in collections that keep growing, like products, listings, or articles? Who's editing the site after launch, you or a pro? And how particular are you about mobile layouts and motion?


The shortcut version:


  • Six pages or fewer, mostly static, you're editing it yourself, go classic Editor.

  • Growing content collections, custom commerce, per-screen design standards, or a team maintaining it, go Studio.

  • Somewhere in between, the tiebreaker is trajectory. Buy for the site you'll have in two years, because 88% of online users are less likely to return after a bad experience (Northern Arizona University, via Forbes Advisor), and a site outgrowing its tool is what "bad experience" usually looks like.
