About Longhopes Donkey Shelter
Located at 66 N. Dutch Valley Road in Bennett, Colorado, just east of Denver, Longhopes Donkey Shelter has been giving donkeys a second chance for more than 25 years.
The story of Longhopes began in 1998 when founder Kathy Dean began searching for donkeys of her own. During that search, she became aware of the heartbreaking circumstances facing many unwanted donkeys, including animals being sent through local sale barns and potentially destined for slaughter.
Kathy believed there had to be another option.
In 1999, Kathy Dean and her husband, Alan Miller, purchased a 20-acre property in Bennett, Colorado. One of the shelter's first rescues was Rocky, a 40-year-old donkey whose owner could no longer care for him.
What began with a desire to help a few animals grew into an organization devoted specifically to the welfare of donkeys.
Longhopes became a Colorado nonprofit corporation and a 501(c)(3) charitable organization in 2000. In 2012, Longhopes became the first donkey shelter in the United States accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS).
Today, Longhopes continues that work from its Colorado home, providing rescue, rehabilitation, training, rehoming, retirement, and end-of-life care for donkeys in need.
More Than Rescue: Giving Donkeys a Future
What we especially appreciate about Longhopes is that its work doesn't end when a donkey arrives safely at the shelter.
Rescue is only the beginning.
Longhopes works to restore the health, confidence, and quality of life of the donkeys entrusted to its care. Donkeys receive important health and wellness care, including vaccinations, hoof trimming, dental care, deworming, and other necessary medical treatment.
They also receive regular handling and training to help prepare adoptable donkeys for successful lives with their future families.
